The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is a standardized test designed to assess the English proficiency of non-native speakers. The TOEFL test measures the ability to understand North American English as it is spoken, written, and heard in college and university settings. The TOEFL iBT (internet-based test) is the most widely taken version of the exam and consists of four sections Reading, Listening, Speaking & Writing

Course learning outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to do the following in each skill:
  • Reading: Measures the ability to read and understand academic texts in English. The section consists of 3-4 reading passages with questions that assess comprehension.
  • Listening: Measures the ability to understand spoken English in academic settings. The section consists of lectures, class discussions, and conversations, and questions that assess comprehension.
  • Speaking: Measures the ability to speak English effectively and clearly. The section consists of six tasks that require the test-taker to speak about a variety of topics, including familiar topics and academic subjects.
  • Writing: Measures the ability to write in English, including the ability to write a response to a question and to write an essay on a given topic. The section consists of two tasks: a response to a question and an independent writing task
  • Understand the structure and format of the TOEFL iBT exam.
  • Improve your English skills, including reading, writing, speaking, and listening, so that you can demonstrate proficiency in these areas on the exam.
  • Familiarize yourself with the types of questions and tasks you will encounter on the TOEFL iBT exam.
  • Develop strategies for approaching each section of the exam, such as how to efficiently manage your time, how to quickly identify the main ideas in a reading passage, and how to organize your thoughts before speaking.
  • Improve your English vocabulary and grammar, as well as your ability to use English in academic and professional settings.
  • Receive feedback on your performance, both from the course instructor and from practice exams, so that you can identify areas for improvement and work to address them.
  • Build confidence in your ability to perform well on the TOEFL iBT exam.
